During her illustrious acting career, Mary Tyler Moore won six Primetime Emmy Awards as well as three Golden Globe Awards.
Additionally, she was also nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance in the movie “Ordinary People” released in 1980.
Her breakthrough role came through the role of Laura Petrie on the Dick Van Dyke Show in the 1960’s.
I was astonished to hear the creative genius behind the program, Carl Reiner say that she had no comedic experience when she began working on the show. That she “picked it up as she went along”. Looking back at the reruns today, it remains clear that she is one of the towering great actors in the pantheon of the sitcom genre.
That show alone would have cemented her legacy in the annals of TV history. But her work on the Mary Tyler Moore Show of the 1970’s went on to further plant her body of work firmly in the league of the all time greats. Here is a scene with Ed Asner from the shows first episode that aired in 1970.
