MFSB was a group of over two dozen musicians based out of Philadelphia’s Sigma Sound Studios.
Working closely with the production team of Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff, they became a powerhouse force that drove musical trends that influenced, and then dominated the musical industry in the early 1970’s and then through the Disco era.
The acronym MFSB was popularly known to stand for “Mother Father Sister Brother” (musicians themselves used another, earthier term of endearment amongst themselves). After backing up acts such as Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes, the O’Jays, the Spinners, Wilson Pickett, Billy Paul, and others, MFSB began performing as a named act for Philadelphia International Records.
Their most successful single was the Sound of Philadelphia (TSOP) also known as the Soul Train theme. Released in March of 1974, it peaked at number one on the Billboard pop and R&B Charts and was influential in establishing the disco sound.
