Stephanie Dorthea Mills, born on March 22, 1957, in Brooklyn, New York’s Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood, is a powerhouse vocalist, songwriter, actress, and Broadway star whose career spans over five decades. Raised singing gospel at Cornerstone Baptist Church, Mills developed her rich, emotive voice early, often responding to her mother in song. By age three, she was performing, and her talent quickly propelled her into the spotlight.

Early Career and Breakthrough on Broadway

Mills began her professional journey at age nine, appearing in the Broadway musical Maggie Flynn (1968). At eleven, she won Amateur Night at the Apollo Theater for six consecutive weeks, which led to her becoming an opening act for the Isley Brothers. She signed with Paramount Records in 1973, releasing her debut single “I Knew It Was Love,” and later moved to Motown, though her early albums there didn’t yield major commercial success.

Her big break came in 1975 at age 17 when she originated the role of Dorothy Gale in the groundbreaking all-Black Broadway musical The Wiz, an adaptation of The Wizard of Oz. The production was a massive hit, winning seven Tony Awards. Mills’ heartfelt performance of the ballad “Home” became her signature song and a No. 1 R&B hit. She performed in the show from 1974–1979 (with later revivals in 1984 and 1993), earning a Drama Desk Award nomination and cementing her status as a Broadway star. She later reprised a role in the 2015 NBC live production as Aunt Em.

Rise to R&B Stardom in the Late 1970s and 1980s

Transitioning from stage to recording, Mills found her groove with producers James Mtume and Reggie Lucas. Her 1979 album What Cha’ Gonna Do with My Lovin’ (20th Century-Fox) marked her commercial breakthrough, going gold and featuring the title track as a hit.

The 1980s were her golden era. Albums like Sweet Sensation (1980, platinum) and Stephanie (1981, platinum) delivered massive R&B successes. Her Grammy-winning single “Never Knew Love Like This Before” (1980) became a million-seller and a disco/R&B classic, earning her the 1981 Grammy for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance. Other No. 1 R&B hits included “I Have Learned to Respect the Power of Love,” “I Feel Good All Over,” “(You’re Puttin’) A Rush on Me,” and “Something in the Way (You Make Me Feel).” She also scored hits with duets, such as “Two Hearts” with Teddy Pendergrass.

Mills released a string of successful albums throughout the decade, including Merciless (1983), If I Were Your Woman (1987), and Home (1989). Her music blended soulful ballads, danceable grooves, and empowering anthems, earning her multiple American Music Awards, NAACP Image Awards, and Soul Train honors.

Later Career, Gospel, and Legacy

In the 1990s and beyond, Mills explored gospel with Personal Inspirations (1994) and continued releasing music, such as Born for This! (2004). She maintained a presence in theater and live performances, including Harlem Suite and her own Broadway showcase Stephanie Mills Comes Home to Broadway (1989). Her voice remained a force in R&B and soul circles.

Into the 2020s, Mills has stayed active with touring (including the Queen’s Tour), live shows, and a podcast. She has shared stories about her relationships in the industry (including with Michael Jackson) and supports causes through her non-profit work, particularly for people with special needs. Her enduring appeal lies in her powerful delivery, emotional depth, and connection to 1970s–80s soul traditions.

With a career that bridges Broadway, R&B, and gospel, Stephanie Mills stands as one of the great interpreters of her generation. Her signature song “Home” resonates as a anthem of belonging and strength, much like her journey from Brooklyn churches to international stages.
