When I was a kid, my gadget of choice was a transistor radio. Unlike my bulky reel to reel tape recorder, it was truly portable and allowed me to pickup stations hundreds or even thousands of miles away. Exotic places like Boston, New York, Cleveland or even Chicago.
Since AM (amplitude modulation) was the frequency of choice, sound quality was not a priority. I was just happy to be escape to my own personal “theatre of the imagination”. Although more sophisticated headphones soon became available they required you to plug them into a jack in a stationary stereo system and I was way too impatient for that.
So my next progression in personal headphones came with the invention of the Sony Walkman. Although not the most durable of products, they were definitely a leap forward in quality compared to the technology of 1960’s mono transistor based offerings. I didn’t upgrade my headphone game until o purchased my first iPhone.
So that is my journey through sound as experienced through headphones over the years. Tell me about yours. Is it similar? Do you use Beats, or Dolby? A lot of people do.
